Do you? Love to hear that, though I've never been there (ony Canada, but I love the way they speak English in the States). But from June 7th, I'll go to Zambia for about two months, where I'll practice my English extensively (well, I've no choice, actually

).

But you won't go to Zambia only to improve your english, won't you?
I prefer the classic Harvard english. Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, simply great.
Was hard for me when my indian colleague told me a "yankee tongue".
Very hard.
Depressed me for hours.

I'd be stupid if that was my only reason. It's about getting to know new people, collecting experiences, broaden my mind, you know?

Oh, poor guy.

I also prefer the good old Oxoford English. Much easier to unterstand than American English.

Depends on where you will be - and what's the reason for your stay. If you just a tourist and you will stay in the huge cities, be shure you will speak english better then 40% of the residents there. If you want to go to school, the rate will went down to 20%. But 60% of the pupils will speak something you will hardly understand.

I was lecturer at Virginia Polytec in Blacksburg. Yes, the "massacre university" which headlined the frontpages just a month ago. Had a great time there, no doubt, and learned a lot.

So true! I visited NYC last autumn. Sometimes it wasn't easy at all to order a BLT sandwich, b/c the staff wasn't able to communicate in English...

Depends on the region. I was in Texas and most students and staff members spoke a clear English. Even the hispanics...

btw: I prefer Texan English! Yehaa!

My uncle was from Texas. I visited him first time in 91 and I was nealry completely unable to understand the words which came out of his mouth.

Yaa....coz its Texaaaan. Hard to understand, but fun to speak. My BE teacher back in Germany got all crazy about it.

But back then when I arrived it was a horror. Didn't understand a bit. A few weeks later everything was perfectly fine and around Christmas I had serious problems speaking German.

EDIT: But I think that's just the normal way of every exchange student to any country. Whether it is Spanish, Swedish, Malaysian or English - it doesn't really matter.
