Depends on where you will be - and what's the reason for your stay. If you just a tourist and you will stay in the huge cities, be shure you will speak english better then 40% of the residents there.

My uncle was from Texas. I visited him first time in 91 and I was nealry completely unable to understand the words which came out of his mouth.
After three weeks I felt much better - I understood appr. 25% ;-)
